Description
This year, the reader is holding the selected studies of the art historian Ernő Marosi, who deals with the world of the Middle Ages. The author is Professor Emeritus of Eötvös Loránd University, former Vice-President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, former Director of the Institute of Art History of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and holder of several professional and state awards. He is the most influential, most quoted, world-renowned authority in the writing of Hungarian art history for the past half a century, as well as the scholarly teacher of generations in university education. It would be difficult to find such an important memory or era in Hungarian medieval art history, from coronation jewelery to the art of the Matthias era, in connection with which Ernő Marosi would not have asked questions renewing thinking, or and explanations. These texts not only teach the knowledge and love of art history. As exemplified mainly by studies of the fate of our artistic heritage, from the special point of view of the humanist scholar, not only past events and old works that can be described and deciphered by meticulous work are visible, but also past and present memories also appear. We need to interpret these facts for the man of today, but in order to do so, we must first and foremost protect them from all kinds of destruction. A passion and consistency similar to the passion for the search for truth is desirable for telling the truth.
